Insulate and Seal
  • Inspect windows, doors, and baseboards for drafts. Seal gaps with weatherstripping or caulk.

  • Add insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces to reduce heat loss.

  • Install door sweeps or draft stoppers on exterior doors.

Maintain Heating Systems
  • Schedule a furnace or boiler service before winter. Replace filters and check for carbon monoxide leaks.

  • Bleed radiators to improve efficiency.

  • If using a fireplace or wood stove, clean the chimney and stock up on dry wood.

Protect Pipes and Plumbing
  • Insulate exposed pipes in unheated areas such as garages or basements.

  • Let faucets drip slightly on extremely cold nights to prevent freezing.

  • Locate your main water shut-off valve in case of a burst pipe.

Prepare Windows and Doors
  • Use thermal curtains or insulated blinds to retain heat.

  • Apply plastic insulation kits to older, single-pane windows.

  • Open curtains during the day for sunlight and close them at night to conserve warmth.

Check Roof, Gutters, and Exterior
  • Clear gutters to prevent ice dams.

  • Inspect the roof for loose shingles or damage.

  • Trim tree branches that could fall during snow or wind.

  • Drain and cover outdoor faucets.

Prepare for Power Outages
  • Keep flashlights, batteries, and candles accessible.

  • Have extra blankets and a safe backup heat source (generator or indoor-rated space heater).

  • Charge power banks and stock nonperishable food and bottled water.

Indoor Comfort and Safety
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors; replace batteries as needed.

  • Reverse ceiling fans to push warm air downward.

  • Use rugs and curtains to make rooms feel warmer and reduce heat loss.
